The idea on which the reality show "Big Brother" is based comes from a novel called 1984 by George Orwell. The book is a wonderful read and confronts us with the risks of a totalitarian government. You can watch the trailer and read the author's biography.

I read 1984 when I was 16 years old and it has remained one of the most influential books I've ever read. It was written just after the second world war in 1948 (84 was a reversal). I sweated with Winston. I shared his fear of discovery. I understood his isolation.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen any of the films of 1984 because I have such strong mental pictures that I want to keep. Room 101 was also a part of 1984 - a terrifying part. I shudder to remember it.
